Wendy Nixon Stothert
Musical Director
Wendy Nixon Stothert, B.Ed, M.EdL, began playing piano and singing at age 6 and was hooked on Music study from then on. She is currently the choral conductor for 6 different adult community performance choirs in the Comox Valley, including the three Just in Time Choirs, the Canadian Military Wives Choir – Comox, the Berwick Choir, and the CV Pop-Up Choir. Her latest projects include Resonation (a drop-in, non-performing song circle) and teaching collaborative vocal improvisation. Wendy taught K-12 Music, Band and Choir in the area for over 15 years. As a performer, most recently you can hear Wendy sing and play with an 80’s cover band, Ricochet! Wendy spearheads Choral Valley, www.choralvalley.ca, a project that aims to help singers and choirs grow through Workshop offerings.
Wendy strongly believes in the power of the Arts to build connection and a feeling of belonging within the community. She currently serves as a Director on the Sid Williams Theatre Society board and is the Board Secretary for CVOX, a local non-profit community radio station.
A life-long learner at heart, Wendy completed her Masters of Educational Leadership degree at Vancouver Island University in 2012, being awarded the Governor General’s Gold Medal for academic achievement. Wendy’s Masters degree inquiry centered on Music Performance Anxiety in choral singers. She has been a Finalist in the Comox Valley Local Hero Award: Community Builder category and was the Local Hero: Arts Ambassador Winner in 2022. Her choirs have been Finalists or Winners in the Comox Valley Record’s Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Choir since 2016. In April 2025, she was awarded the Amy Ferguson Award from the BC Choral Federation, given to “an outstanding choral director who is also an excellent vocal teacher fostering superior vocal practice”.
Aside from spending quality time with her family and being outside, facilitating rewarding singing experiences with people to help spread positivity and connection in community through music is one of her greatest joys.
Making music with the Just in Time Choirs and Sean Mooney is a dream come true for Wendy. She loves the vibrant interactions with the singers, the community feel, and the thrill of hearing harmonies come together. She firmly believes that everyone has a voice and that singing should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. By providing solo and small group opportunities in both rehearsal and performance settings, Wendy hopes to facilitate singers on their path to performing with excellence and confidence.
